As children we learn and experience a lot of things which influence us in our thoughts, acts and perception. Knowledge that is acquired do not wear away as we grow but gets built on as we acquire more knowledge through learning and experience.
Layering helps to collide multiple data to create a uniform piece which expresses a broader idea without each individual component loosing its substance. They can be used during the design phase in architecture, where an architect collides data in order to determine building placement and how it will relate to its context which helps the architect in creating a design that is well thought out and meaningful to its users.
Layering also expresses a rationale to certain design decisions like placement of space and overall form of the building. For example, a well thought out building form can be derived from layering information pertaining to views, solar orientation, wind orientation, shade from other buildings etc which helps in the creation of architecture that serves its users better through expressions of the data. To the average person, layers can be simplified into components which are easier to understand by reducing the cluster of data.

School Competition Diagramatic Model

For this project the class is design a school located in Baja California in the town of Esteban Cantu. The idea for the design I am working on uses natural elements of the site as well as one of the biggest symbols of Mexican culture. When placing the building I took wind, sun, water runoff, circulation around the site, and the views around the site. The best place to do this is in the present location of the school. Also, as a way to save money on the project the old school building and bus are going to be part of the new school building. The floor plan of this new building is based off of symbol know as the “Coat of arms” which is the eagle perched on a cactus eating a snake. This is the seal of Mexico as well as the symbol on the Mexican flag. I traced around the image to make a shape that looked like a crescent moon with a circle. I then clean it up so that it did look like them. From that I was able to have three different areas in the building. Do to the fact that’s this school will be used for children classes as well as adult classes I want to have a couple of different wings to keep them separated if they had both going at the same time. The three areas consisted of things that they would share like the cafeteria and library._DCL

Sentient

Movement into technology

Sentient is defined from Webster’s as responsive to or conscious of sense impressions (sentient beings), finely sensitive in perception or feeling, and aware. Sense the beginning of time people and humans have been able to do this, but a new avenue is now opening up. For years Hollywood has made movies about computers and technology that are sentient in movies like the Terminator serie with skynet and robots and in Knight Rider with KITT (picture above). Today thought computers and technology are now starting to do this.  At the Cambridge, formally AT&T Laboratories, made a system called “Active Bat” which is a system that can track you using sensor as you move though a building.  The system can transfer a phone call to the closes phone near you, measure and survey building, as well as real time rendering of the building.  How is this done the workers at the facility ware a wireless tag called “Bat” that emits a pulse which is receved by a receiver in the ceiling which is sent the information to a computer that measures and calculates people’s positions in the building. Another project done in 2004 used sensors in a chair and the computer connected to the chair would talk to you and tell you were you were sitting on that chair.  In class right now the group I am in has a motion sensor that is rigged to a servo motor that turns when the sensor is trip and the motor turns and activates a camera to take a picture. This make you wonder if one day we make a computer system that can replace humans. Some day the judgment day in the Terminator movies could come true._DCL, DM, JW

Sue Petrie Marsha

During her appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show Sue Marsha explained to the audience the importance Yoga/Flexibility. She said that flexibility is one of the most effective ways of freeing ones mind from stress.  In architecture one can say that, flexibility of space  relieves building owners from the financial stress of remodelling. It can also make space feel like a living entity which moves, shapes and responses to its environment. Adaptive use in architecture refers to spaces that can be reconfigured to suit the purpose for which it isused for. An example is reconfiguring a large dining hall for use as a temporal / permanent movie theater. The purpose of creating adaptive spaces is to allow for future change of spaces at low cost while fulfilling the need for a functional interior accommodations while taking into consideration issues of privacy, aesthetics, acoustics, etc. A system of movable and removable partition walls can to used to change the interior floor plan layout of the building as well as certain aspects of the exterior enclosure.
